Robotics & Engineering - Week of 01/19/26
This week was a very short week, due to MLK day and a professional development day for the teachers.
Nonetheless, there was still plenty of time to break things.
In two days, Jonas and I managed to set back our progress on the golf cart by over 6 months. The first issue we discovered was that one of the batteries was shorted to the frame ground. Although not immediately dangerous, it increases the risk of shorting the entire LiFePO4 battery pack.
The next day, the entire BMS blew up.
We had to tear the entire golf cart aprt to get to the electronics and battery management system that fried itself. This proved to be challenging and I ended up staying after school on Wednesday to finish taking things apart and try to get the battery out of the frame.
Once we got inside, I disconnected all the wires and got the BMS out and dissasembled to see exactly what went wrong
Yikes. Luckily, we quickly found a new company that offers (what seems like) a better BMS, which we purchasded. The only downside is that it will take several weeks to arrive. So I will have to entertain myself until then!
